Conic Sections Project
The conic sections project will count as your test grade for the chapter and will be worth 45 points. You may work in pairs, however ensure that each student contributes equally to the project. Each individual/group will receive a different set of equations (given below).
Points:
The circle, ellipse, hyperbola, and parabola will each be worth 10 points. Specifics for each conic section are given at the end. In general, the ten points are from:
accurately matching the equation to the conic section (1 point),
correctly beginning completing the square (1 point),
writing the resulting standard form of the equation (1 point),
listing each point/line requested (3 points),
accurately graphing the conic section (2 points),
labeling everything requested (1 point),
and drawing the graph by hand on graph paper (1 point).
The remaining five points for the project result from neatness, organization, and creativity (which includes ensuring your names are on the project).
Conic Sections:
Circle:
1. Complete the square (show work)
2. List center and radius
3. Graph
a. Identify the units if not one
b. Label the center with the word ‘center’ or ‘C’
Ellipse:
1. Complete the square (show work)
2. List the vertices, foci, center, and endpoints of minor axis.
3. Graph
a. Identify the units if not one
b. Label the center, foci, and vertices.
Hyperbola:
1. Complete the square (show work)
2. List the vertices, foci, and center.
3. Graph
a. Identify the units if not one
b. Label the center, foci, vertices and asymptotes.
Parabola:
1. Complete the square (show work)
2. List the vertex, focus, and directrix.
3. Graph
a. Identify the units if not one
b. Label the vertex, focus, directrix and latus rectum.
Equations:
Some equations will have "--" (minus a negative) in the equation. Please change this to a plus.
